Be careful not to get the gel on your hands.

We have all been hearing so much about the economy.  Some of us have had friends or family members feel the unfortunate consequences of an economic down turn.  Being involved in the operation of a small business, I see the ebb and flow on a daily basis.  At various functions we hear the anecdotal evidence that things will get worse before they get better, that things are turning around and will improve quickly, or that we are in this down turn for the long haul.  As the eternal optimist, I am holding out for the quick turnaround, we will be forced to lick our proverbial wounds, regroup, refocus and get back to what we know.

For many of us this is not the first down turn we have gone through, and if history is our guide it will not be our last.  So, as a brief distraction let’s have a look at a curious turn of events in the imaging world.

It was just a few years ago that Polaroid discontinued production of its instant film.  Many of us cut our teeth shooting Polaroid on the set to confirm layout, exposure and the like.  My generation of photographers truly appreciated the “safety net” that the instant film provided.  Having pushed Polaroid aside, digital image capture ushered in a whole new world.  Although we mourned the passing of Polaroid, it was quickly forgotten under the intoxicating glow of the digital image emanating from our flat panel cinema displays.

But as they say, that which is old will be new again, it has been reported this week, by various sources, (not the least of which being National Public Radio) that the Polaroid process may be resurrected.  Luxembourg-based Genii Capital, is expected to buy Polaroid Holding Company, Petters Capital for an estimated $42 million dollars. (In 2005 Petters Capital purchased Polaroid Holding Company for $426 million.)  It looks like not only will the Polaroid brand get new life, but that if only for nostalgia’s sake, we may be able to once again go out, throw the lever on the trusty Polaroid back, hear the familiar drag and click, listen for the chime of the timer, tear the paper envelope, and enjoy that tactile Polaroid experience.  Be careful not to get the gel on your hands.
